Safety Monitor: How to Protect Your Kids Online
Published in Paperback by Bonus Books (August, 2002)
Author: Detective Mike Sullivan
Average review score:

I bought this book because....
of all of the cyber safety books out there, the advice from Safety Monitor comes from a cop that is out there everyday, putting cyber predators behind bars. Who better to give advice to parents like myself.

Sullivan really takes me through the process step by step starting with the profile of an online predator -how to identify one, and finally how to avoid and protect your family. The book ends with a plethora of valuable resources from security software to smart cyber behavior, and finally various national organizations that identify and support this very important issue..

Detective Mike Sullivan patrols the cyber playgrounds and teaches parents how to do the same.

VERY INFORMATIVE
I am so very thankful for this book! My kids spend a lot of time online and I just couldn't imagine one of my kids being unfortunate enough to stumble into dangerous territory. I bought this book after seeing Detective Mike Sullivan on The Oprah Winfrey show teaching parents of the dangers that children face online. I purchased this book as a preventative. I really enjoyed thechapter on ways to to talk to your child about the dangers that children face online. How do I bring it up? How do I gain their trust? How to I get them to take me seriously? Another chapter that I found INVALUABLE, was about protection software that I could install in my computer. Sullivan gave me the tools to safe-proof my child's computer.

I recommend this book to all parents!

A Lifesaver!
Recently, my child began corresponding with a stranger online. My child started receiving sexually explicit photos from this person. I honestly didn't know what to do. I taught my child not to give out any personal information, but I did not know how to monitor her emails or how to stop her from "accidentally" surfing pornographic websites. I felt helpless. I purchased Safety Monitor and began my online education.

I hate to admit this, but my child can navigate through the internet better than me or my husband! How are we to protect her? Detective Sullivan not only taught me how to take control of my family's online experience, but he did so in a language that I can understand.

I am most grateful for this informative book, and urge all parents of children online to start educating yourselves now.

The Thief Who Couldn't Sleep: An Evan Tanner Mystery (The Evan Tanner Mystery)
Published in Audio Cassette by Chivers Audio Books (November, 1999)
Authors: Lawrence Block and Nick Sullivan
Average review score:

Block introduces Evan Tanner
My first introduction to Lawrence Block's Evan Tanner was in his 1998 book, "Tanner on Ice." The spy-hero had been absent for twenty-five years was brought back by Block. There were seven previous novels, all out-of-print and now available in paperback. "The Thief Who Couldn't Sleep," was Block's first Evan Tanner mystery. We learn early in this first work Tanner had his sleep center destroyed during the war and therefore no longer needs to sleep. He spends all of his time awake that may or may not be to his benefit. Tanner probably never planned on being a spy but here in our first encounter with him he led a revolution in Macedonia treks from Ireland to the continent and across Europe to Turkey in search for missing gold. Tanner is an interesting character although not as humorous as Bernie Rhodenbarr in Block's The Burglar who series or a serious as Matt Scudder in the long standing series with that New York City based detective. None the less "The Thief who Couldn't Sleep," is pleasant to read. I am pleased that the powers-that-be decided to reprint the entire Evan Tanner series. I am looking forward to the others, which I was able to order from Amazon.com.

The start of something beautiful
The first Evan Tanner Novel, where our hero, a bit of a con-man and thief, who has a disorder which prevents him from sleeping, accidentally finds himself on an espionage mission.

While the later novels are spy stories with satirical overtones, this one is a crime caper with spies in pursuit and a comedy of errors in progress.

I can't recommend the series highly enough. It's literate, it's funny, and the commentary on European ethnic nationalism is still extremely valid.

Hilarious!
I like this character even more than Matthew Scudder

Oldsmobile 4-4-2 & W-Machines Restoration Guide (Motorbooks International Authentic Restoration Guides)

Good book to have, but crappy otherwise
THis book is replete with errors. Beware! Don't think what's in this book is gospel. If you get it, get it for the factory documentation that is reprinted in there.

Good, but not a how-to book
This is a great book with lots of historical info, but I was hoping for more of a how-to guide on maintenance and restoration. This book is perfect to determine if a car for sale is factory original. In my case, I've already got the car, I need to know how to keep it going. Maybe I'll get lucky with an out of print shop manual?

A must have for a restoration of a 1964-1972 Olds
This book provides answers to tricky questions. It breaks down option lists, VIN tags, Specifications for 1964-1972 Olds & W-machines. Book contains spotter tips for certain models of Oldsmobile's and has many excellent B&W photos. Also has copies of various build sheets and dealer sales brochures.

If you are restoring an Olds or thinking about it, this book is a MUST have! While it's not a 'HOW-TO' book, the data and photos will help you along the way to a perfect restoration. Plus, this book makes for great reading, if your an Oldsmobile fan!

This book is worth its weight in gold when it comes to restoring an Oldsmobile, Believe me.

A Color Atlas of Parasitology
Published in Paperback by Parasitology (January, 1998)
Author: John T. Sullivan
Average review score:

TAIWAN
The resolution is not good in these pictures. The color is not very good in these pictures. Some of pictuers are drawed not to photograph.

Good benchtop atals
I recently acquired a copy of this book, and found it quite good, the photographs present throughout the book, were well done and good for a atlas to have near the microscope as more than representation of the parasite appears, a failing found in some of the more established atalses. The fact that all of the photos are photos and ther are a number of them makes the book usefull in the lab environment. The accompany burst with each photo is concise and free of extraneous detail. However there are two critisms, the book would fae better if printed on a water resistant paper and a stronger back and front cover which a fixed by adding by own stronger front and back cover. this relates to the spiral bound edition.

Great Overview of Parisitology
I think this book makes a great companion to any parasitology text. It covers the "major" parasites and some vectors in example photos of perfect clarity. If you must identify such specimens in the laboratory, this is a great refrence book. Most examples you could come across will not be this clear, so the atlas will help you note the major differences between parasites, making identification easier. There is little or no "background noise" like there are on most slides available today so that you can focus on the parasite itself.

Practice and Procedure of the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia
Published in Hardcover by Kluwer Law International (31 October, 2000)
Authors: John E. Ackerman, Eugene O'Sullivan, and Eugene Osullivan
Average review score:

Very Poor
This book is very poor indeed. It is very badly written, inaccurate, poorly organised and woefully out of date.

A must-have book
This book is a bible for lawyers who wish to practice international criminal law. It is the only text which provides summaries of the precedents of the ICTY and ICTR. The authors organize and index the book well, and their own commentaries into the decisions provide the insight of experienced trial lawyers in these courts. It would be malpractice for any lawyer to set foot in these courts without Ackerman and O'Sullivan's book.

The Academic's Perspective
Being familiar with the importance of the ICTY to the growth of international criminal law, I am pleased to see a book which details the actual functioning of such a Tribunal through its case law. To be able to easily access information regarding the Statute and the Rules of Procedure as it has been laid out by Ackerman and O'Sullivan places this volume head and shoulders above its competition.

Those who teach in the domains of internatonal criminal law or humanitarian law would be remisted from not including this volume on their required reading list. It provides students with an in-depth understanding of the first court to try international criminals since Nuremburg. This effort is a must for any law library.

Wounded in Action
Published in Paperback by Press-Tige Pub Inc (December, 1998)
Author: John Sullivan
Average review score:

Wounded in action--factual account or soapbox?
I was quite disappointed with Sullivan's book--most particularly so because he uses so much of it as a political soapbox. All under the guise of factual reporting. This book does a terrible disservice to the veteran, Gil Isham. His story is no place for political criticism--especially since the first 6 pages are shots at Bill Clinton. The warning on the back cover, "This book is unsuitable for younger and more sensative persons...Its content may prove hazardous to a reader's peace of mind" gives one a preview of the yellow journalism and sensationalizing that is done under the pretense of "non fiction." Sullivan shamelessly takes advantage of the content to make his own persoanal points--he exaggerates, he poorly focuses the material and is guilty of that mass media frenzy to make a buck from someone's horror and chaos. This book is a rip-off, and should not be dignified with serious attention, much less the 11 bucks. If you buy this book, you'll feel like YOU were wounded in action!

When it comes to war, listen to the voice of experience!
I read Wounded In Action upon the recommendation of a friend. I highly recommend the book to anyone studying the Korean War or war in this century! The horrifying events portrayed by the author bring a reality to war not yet seen by the youngest of Americans. The story is made intensely real when the reader learns that the soldier in the story is still alive, still coping with his war experience. The author teaches us that the war experience of the ordinary soldier is far different from that of the military "brass" and the politicians. The author also wants the reader to appreciate that the "post traumatic" stress of war lingers and affects many more people than just the suffering soldier.....It affects us all!

Intense! The reality of war is in this book!
Not being a veteran I found this book to be hard to believe! How could we do this to our own people or other human beings? The book shows that war is HELL and so can be the aftermath. Now I know why this became the "Forgotten War"! A great book to learn the "truths" of war!

An American Voter: My Love Affair with Presidential Politics
Published in Hardcover by Bloomsbury USA (October, 2002)
Author: Joan Sullivan
Average review score:

Sullivan tells it like it is.
Perhaps the most impressive aspect of Ms. Sullivan's book is the accuracy with which she portrays the participants in her anecdotes. As I covered Bradley's campaign for Reuters, I came in contact with many of the players, and upon reading the book was struck by the generosity and penetration that were displayed in turns. Without overtly caricaturing her subjects, Ms. Sullivan has managed to emphasize many of the quirks that typify people on the campaign trail.

A fresh political voice
Joan Sullivan gives readers an inside look into presidential politics with all of its hopes, aspirations, and flaws. Sullivan joined Bill Bradley's 2000 presidential campaign as an advance team member. She writes about the nuts-and-bolts of choosing the right podium-not to ostentatious, but not too plain- to planning her own large scale event in New York and having to secure a site with just a few hours to spare. Sullivan writes in a very fresh non-politically jaded voice, yet sometimes languishing to quotes from political books. Sullivan also helps a reader appreciate a candidate who is on the losing side and the work that goes into bringing issues to the American voter as well as a face to Bill Bradley and all political candidates.

As a Guide, or to Reflect
As an advance person who has had the pleasure of working with many of the same people Joan Sullivan mentions in her book, I can personally testify to the truthfulness of "An American Voter." Sullivan describes the chaotic day of a political advance staffer better than anyone I have yet to read. If you are looking to do advance work, read this as a guide. If you are an advance person, read this to reflect. This one is highly recommended.

The Crystal Handbook
Published in Paperback by Dutton Books (May, 1999)
Author: Kevin Sullivan
Average review score:

Cheap and Nifty referance or a skim of an introduction
I wouldn't use this book as my only book if I was going to study Crystals and earth consiousness, but this book from my quick read look to be a inexpensive and good small referance to use on most any common crystal. I am very very skeptical on a lot of the information because the author does not give any referances and makes claims that are "watery" with out much definition, and I do not have the resources at the present time to verify its information. This book has a decent blurb on for instance Amythist... it would talk about its use in history and folklore, and also a good deal of its metaphysical properties. It is alphabetical by name, but not all of the crystals are not the best organised because you have to go to Quartz to get to Amythyst, or Tigerseye because these are Quartz crystals... but at the same time he has numerous other crystals that he says is in the "quartz family" for whatever that means. It is limited on how many crystals it covers, and it has very limited amount of information on what exactly you do with the crystal to actually "use" or work with them.
But I give this four stars because in general it is a good little book and I do not regret buying it one bit.
If you are looking for a really good book on the subject I would HIGHLY sugest a book on crystals by Maya Heath though her books can be hard to find.
Blessed be.

Incredible resource
This is an incredible resource you can carry around in a pocket when visiting rock shops.

The ONLY crystal book I have read that is superior to this one is "Love Is In The Earth: A Kaleidoscope Of Crystals" by Melody

I did detect a few errors in this book.

1. Page 20: "Natural gemstones do not lose their power with age or use."

This is not so. I have seen Amethyst's, Labradorite, Smoky Quartz, Obsidian, Raindow Obsidian, Ametrine, etc; lose their coloration with use.

2. Page 42: the author states that Bloodstone is "Technicaly, it is a type of opaque Quartz"

Blood Stobe is not a quartz. It is a Heliotrope.

3. On page 125-126 the author discusses Tigers Eye, and Cat's Eye as if both stone are one and the same.

This is not so. It's true that both Tigers eye, and Cat's eye are asbestos fibers in silicon dioxide; but the appearance, and price varies greatly.

In Cat's eye the fibers are straight, and the stone is more eye like in appearance. This is a gem quality stone at gem quality prices!

In Tigers Eye: the fibers are crumpled or twisted. I have picked up nice specimens of Tiger's Eye in four different colors as cheaply as 75 cents each!

Implying that Cat's Eye and Tiger's Eye are the same stone is like saying that Peridot and Olivine are the same stone. Peridot is gem quality, and olivine is not. I bought a nice peice of Olivine for 50 cents.

Over all except for these few pointsl this book is an excelent resource.

Excellent Crystal info -- but no pictures
If you are already familiar with Crystals, but want more in-depth information on properties, legends, and histories, then this is a book for you! However, this book has no pictures, and only limited info. on using crystals.

For Your Garden: Garden Sheds and Potting Areas (For Your Garden Series)
Published in Paperback by Friedman/Fairfax Publishing (June, 1999)
Author: Penelope O'Sullivan
Average review score:

What a disappointment - Don't judge a book by it's cover
This is among 5 books I purchased to help me plan setting up my potting shed. The cover picture, and a review, prompted me to purchase. Truly, this is not a helpful book. I also purchased eri Dunn's Potting Places, and THAT's a helpful book, go there to read my review. Penelope O'Sullivan's book, however, seems directed to a group of gardeners I apparently don't fit into. Her ideas are not complete, she is vague, photos are OK, but not inspiring, and some of them are just outrageous - the second from the last photo is of the most ridiculous "cutting room" I have ever seen, and she raves about this lavish room's "practicality", when it is clear by the way the room was propped, that it is completely unuseful. There were columns on either side of the sink! I almost flipped. The inclusion of this photo speaks volumes about the author and her perception of the what the reader is looking for. Sorry, Penelope, but you missed the mark for this reader, and I discourage anyone from choosing this book.

This book will inspire you to want a garden shed.
This book is a necessity for any gardener who is thinking of building a potting shed. This is the book every person needs who has said, "I have an idea in my head and I can't express it," or "I know what I want, but the visualization of it hasn't come to me yet." This book, with its beautiful pictures of all types and kinds of sheds and potting areas will enable anyone to dialogue with their builder or landscaper. This is definitely a book designed for the visual. If you are inclined to read the captions, a gardener will not be disappointed as the author is knowledgeable about the names of the planting material. All the examples are of real gardens with real people using them. This is a book that will be picked up again and again for inspiration and ideas on putting plants and structures together. Highly recommended for any gardeners' reference library

New York Exposed: Photographs from the Daily News
Published in Hardcover by Harry N Abrams (November, 2001)
Authors: Shawn O'Sullivan, Richard Slovak, and Pete Hamill
Average review score:

new york in photos
a compilation of photos from the daily news photographers
incredible collection here. my only disappoitment, which is a slight one, is that the 90's section does not seem to have the same feel as the other decades do

An Excellent New York Photo Documentary
As the grandson of NY Daily News photographer Charles Hoff, this book offered much insight in to family (as well as New York) history. Only a hint at the tremendous photographic contribution of the NYDN can be addressed in one book, even in a volume this large. Still, it reveals fascinating insight in to the last eighty years of New York visual history through stunningly beautiful photographs. The quality is only enhanced by the fact that the book was published just prior to the tragic events of September, 2001 -- the book closes with a wonderfful photograph of the World Trade Center, as well as text by Shawn O'Sullivan that in retrospect is perfectly appropriate -- that the picture press remains vigilant in a constantly changing city.

The dailiness of New York life.
The New York Daily News was always the largest circulation tabloid in America and as Pete Hamill says in his excellent twenty page essay 'The Daily News was possessed of a quality derived from the city itself: energy. The tone was brash, sarcastic, irreverent.' All successful tabloid papers have two things in common, the headlines and the photos and this beautifuuly produced book has hundreds of the latter.

To get great photos the paper had always invested in its photo department, which by the fifties had two planes, ten radio cars, a brigade of motorcycle couriers and a staff of sixty-three to insure no story was missed. This book shows the benefits of this investment. Eight chapters are devoted to a photo record of the decades from the twenties thru the nineties and as the News was a tabloid, the rough and tumble of daily is revealed, politicians, celebrities, sport, crime (some of these predictably stark) the everyday and when appropriate, the weather. Each photo has very detailed captions and thankfully, the photographer's name.

Shawn O'Sullivan, who works on the paper, writes in a short essay titled 'Photography at the Daily News' 'In making this book, we sought to show the images in all of their original beauty, as the photographer originally witnessed the scene....' I think this was a mistake, newspaper photographers don't know how a photo is going to be used on the page and they try to take plenty of shots, so that Photo Editors will have lots of choice. I have a book published in 1979 celebrating fifty years of the News and it has many of the same photos as this latest book but in the earlier book the photos are handled in a much tighter way and sensibly trimmed to get the best from the image.

Apart from some of the photo trimming I enjoyed New York Exposed, a photographic book that captures the dailiness of New York life. If you lived in the city it will be a stimulating reminder of the last eighty years.
